Ma questo è solo l’esordio di una Via crucis, laica e universale, che percorre una sequenza di massacri, e che ancora non si è conclusa.
Già in alcuni oli su tela, o in disegni a tecnica mista, come Gabbia (1999), Caterva (2007), Confini (2017), Cratere (2019), Combustione e Desolazione (2020), si colgono le testimonianze dell’artista, che ci giungono quali moniti anticipatori di lavori come Ai confini di Gaza (2013) e Discesa (per Gaza) (2019), in cui quella sottile striscia di terra viene vissuta come un’entità spaziale chiusa e opprimente, destinata a un genere umano disperato.

But this is just the beginning of a secular and universal Via Crucis that traverses a series of massacres which has still not concluded.
In some of the oils on canvas, or mixed-media drawings, such as Gabbia [Cage] (1999), Caterva [Swarm] (2007), Confini [Borders] (2017), Cratere [Craters] (2019), Combustione and Desolazione [Combustion and Desolation] (2020), we can already see the artist’s testimony, a bleak foretaste of pieces such as Ai confini di Gaza [On the Gaza Border] (2013) and Discesa (per Gaza) [Descent (to Gaza)] (2019), in which the thin strip of land is experienced as a closed and oppressive spatial entity destined for a desperate human race.

Nell’osservare l’arte di Selim si ha una profonda sensazione di coinvolgimento, non solo per il carattere tragico degli eventi storici ai quali ci rimanda, ma anche grazie al rapporto, quasi simbiotico, tra scultura, pittura e disegno.
Il visitatore si trova al centro di una rete di interrelazioni e suggestioni emotive, che danno vita ad un contesto spaziale e immaginativo generato dal dialogo tra le diverse forme espressive.
La percezione è quella di essere commossi, nel senso di messi in movimento, smossi dalla portata delle immagini e del loro significato.

When looking at Selim’s art, one has a deep sense of involvement, not only because of the tragic nature of the historical events to which it refers, but also because of the almost symbiotic relationship between sculpture, painting and drawing.
Visitors find themselves at the centre of a network of interrelations and emotional evocations that create a spatial and imaginative context generated by the dialogue between different forms of expression.
The perception is that of being moved, in the sense of being set in motion, moved by the scope of the images and their meaning.
